You're reading: Party of Regions leader: ‘Pre-term mayoral elections in Kyiv are pointless’

The Regions Party has said that it would be pointless to hold mayoral election in Kyiv sooner than 2012.

"Let’s see – the next election is scheduled for 2012. I think there’s no point in hurrying," Leader of the Regions Party parliamentary faction Oleksandr Yefremov told reporters on November 17, commenting on MP Oleksandr Omelchenko’s statement about a possibility of holding mayoral election in the capital in December 2010.

"I think, we should give the newly appointed head of the administration [Oleksandr Popov] some time to work, and demonstrate the effectiveness of his work. Only after that we will talk about a possible election in the city," Yefremov said.

As reported, on November 16, Ukraine’s President Viktor Yanukovych dismissed Mayor Leonid Chernovetsky as the head of Kyiv City State Administration and appointed Oleksandr Popov to this post.
